Man Opens Fire on People in Sydney Street
Authorities say the shooter, a 60-year-old man, unleashed between 50 and 100 rounds using a high-powered rifle, targeting both passersby and vehicles below. The violent outburst sent glass flying and pedestrians scrambling for cover.
Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry confirmed the number of shots fired and the arrest of the suspect, stating that after a tense two-hour standoff, officers stormed the building, detained the gunman, and seized the firearm. “Police do not yet know his motive,” Parry said.
Among those injured, a man in his 50s suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and neck and was rushed to the hospital. The remaining 16 victims sustained cuts and bruises from shattered glass and were treated on-site.
“It’s unprecedented for Sydney to experience something like this, with such a large number of shots fired,” New South Wales Acting Assistant Commissioner Trent King told media on Monday.
