New Frog Species Discovered in South China
The amphibian has been named Leptobrachella kungfu, drawing inspiration from the Chinese martial art and paying tribute to Foshan’s reputation as a famous "City of Kung Fu."
This finding was the result of a collaborative effort between researchers from Guangdong Polytechnic of Environmental Protection Engineering and the Guangdong Provincial Academy of Environmental Science.
Their work was published on Wednesday in the international taxonomy journal ZooKeys.
The research team reported that the species was recognized through a combination of physical traits and molecular studies.
The newly discovered frogs are relatively small, with the six adult male specimens collected measuring between 25.7 mm and 28.2 mm from snout to vent.
Distinctive features of this frog include a black stripe behind the eye, slightly webbed toes with broad edges, continuous ridges beneath its toes, and rough dorsal skin without pronounced folds.
Its natural habitat is primarily in the hilly areas of the western Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a region known for high population density and extensive urban development.
“The discovery shows that even small patches of nature within big cities are crucial homes for unique species and need our protection,” stated team leader Lin Shishi.
He emphasized that this finding highlights ongoing advances in detailed and specialized biodiversity research within the area.
