Musk claims critics exploit AI deepfake concerns to push censorship

(MENAFN) Elon Musk argued that backlash against the AI chatbot on his social media platform X is being exploited as a pretext to impose restrictions on expression, claiming opponents are looking for “any excuse for censorship.” The controversy centers on the chatbot’s ability to generate explicit deepfake images without consent, including content involving women and minors.

Responding publicly to the criticism, Musk dismissed the motives of his detractors, writing: "They just want to suppress free speech," in a post shared on his platform on Saturday.

The uproar intensified after the chatbot’s image-generation tool sparked widespread condemnation. Musk’s AI company initially brushed off the accusations with the statement “Legacy Media Lies.” However, following mounting pressure, the chatbot later introduced limitations, blocking non-paying users from creating images and reserving the function for subscribers.

That adjustment failed to satisfy critics and authorities, many of whom argued that restricting the tool to paying users does nothing to address the underlying problem. Governments and advocacy groups across different regions condemned the feature, with some taking steps to prevent its use altogether.

In Southeast Asia, one country moved to temporarily block access to the chatbot due to concerns over deepfake abuse. Meanwhile, European officials called on social media platforms to take stronger action to stop the generation of illegal material.

In the UK, officials sharply criticized X’s approach, warning that limiting the feature to subscribers merely transforms the creation of unlawful images into a “premium service.”

While Musk has previously faced scrutiny over his political positions and alleged support for extremist movements, the latest wave of criticism is largely focused on the chatbot itself—specifically its role in producing obscene, potentially illegal material and breaching widely accepted standards of decency.
