Lord Mandelson Gets Released on Bail After Misconduct Arrest

(MENAFN) Lord Mandelson has been released on bail, the Metropolitan Police said, hours after his arrest on Monday on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The police stated that the 72-year-old was released pending further investigation. A news outlet observed him returning to his London home at 02:00 GMT.

Lord Mandelson was taken into custody at an address in Camden, north London, and transported to a police station for questioning.

Authorities launched an investigation earlier this month over allegations that, while serving as a government minister, Lord Mandelson passed on market-sensitive government information to the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Monday’s arrest followed search warrants executed at two locations in Wiltshire and Camden, the police added.

Lord Mandelson has not made any public comments recently regarding the Epstein files, but sources told the news outlet that he maintains he acted lawfully and was not motivated by financial gain.

He was appointed British ambassador to the US in February 2025 but was dismissed in September after Downing Street cited new information about the extent of his relationship with Epstein.

The government said it expects to release the first documents relating to Mandelson’s appointment in "early March."

On Monday afternoon, he was seen being led from his London home by plainclothes officers and placed in the back of an unmarked vehicle.

The news outlet understands that the arrest was carried out by the Metropolitan Police’s central specialist crime division. Consultations between the police and the Crown Prosecution Service are ongoing.
