Malta to Hold Snap General Election as PM Seeks New Mandate

(MENAFN) Malta will hold a snap general election on May 30 after Prime Minister Robert Abela announced he is seeking a renewed mandate to govern amid what he described as growing global challenges.

According to reports, Abela said in a post on the social media platform X that recent international developments and domestic priorities make it necessary to return to voters.

"In light of the current global realities and challenges ahead, our country needs a renewed mandate to move forward with stability. I will be recommending to H.E. President Myriam Spiteri Debono the dissolution of Parliament for a general election on May 30," Abela wrote on US social media platform X.

In a televised address, he further explained that the decision is intended to ensure political stability and continuity at a time of international uncertainty. Local media outlet Malta Today reported that he described the situation abroad as “extraordinary,” requiring firm leadership at home.

He added that Malta needs a government with a clear and renewed mandate focused entirely on national priorities.

He said the country needs an "elected government, with a new mandate, focused solely on the country's needs, given all the challenges that the current context brings, and the coming months will be crucial."

According to reports, Abela also outlined his Labour Party’s upcoming campaign focus, which will center on a five-year policy program aimed at improving living standards. He pledged a pragmatic approach, emphasizing planning and feasibility rather than political competition.

The election will be Malta’s 26th general vote since the establishment of self-government in 1921.
