Google Breaks Ground on India's First AI Hub
Indian Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw joined senior officials at the inauguration ceremony, marking what the government framed as a pivotal moment in the nation's digital transformation. "It's indeed a very significant start that we are doing. What is significant is the very short time frame on which everything has come to this stage today," Vaishnaw said.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, addressing the gathering via video message, positioned the facility as far more than an infrastructure project. The AI Hub is a "strategic blueprint designed to fuel the government's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision," Kurian said — a reference to New Delhi's sweeping national agenda to elevate India to developed-nation status by the centenary of its independence.
Kurian outlined the scale of Google's ambitions for the project. "We're deploying a full AI stack to empower every Indian consumer and every enterprise with immense compute power and the tools to lead the world," he said, adding: "We're committed to investing in the local ecosystem to uplift business and entrepreneurs and advance skills development to create a sustainable future."
According to Google, the hub "will combine powerful AI infrastructure, data center capacity, new large-scale energy sources and an expanded fiber-optic network, all in one place" — an integrated model designed to serve both public and private sector demand at scale.
The groundbreaking follows Google's October announcement of plans to construct the hub, backed by a pledged investment of approximately $15 billion over five years. The tech giant is not alone in its India push — Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella last year announced a $17.5 billion investment in the country, signaling a broader race among global technology titans to secure a foothold in one of the world's fastest-growing digital economies.
