South Korean Appeals Court Increases Former First Lady’s Corruption Sentence
The Seoul High Court reportedly ruled that Kim Keon Hee, wife of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, was guilty of involvement in a stock price manipulation scheme and of receiving luxury gifts linked to the Unification Church. Her original sentence of 20 months was significantly increased following the appeal decision.
Prosecutors, represented by special counsel Min Joong-ki’s team, had reportedly pushed for a far harsher penalty of 15 years in prison.
The ruling comes amid wider legal and political turmoil surrounding former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office last year following findings related to the declaration of martial law in December 2024.
Multiple legal cases have since been filed against Yoon, and reports indicate he is currently serving a life sentence in connection with the same martial law-related ruling.
