Zelensky Warns UK Party Over Removal of Ukrainian Flags in Public Spaces
During remarks made in an interview with The Guardian while visiting London, Zelensky addressed decisions by Reform-controlled local councils in parts of the UK to remove foreign flags, including Ukrainian flags, from government buildings. He urged that the Ukrainian flag be restored, according to reports.
He warned that even small political or symbolic actions could harm what he described as a “big friendship,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong ties between Ukraine and the UK.
A Reform UK spokesperson defended the policy, arguing that only British national flags should be flown on public buildings, describing the inclusion of foreign flags as unnecessary symbolic signaling, according to reports.
The party has maintained that public institutions under its control should display only the Union Flag and the St George’s Cross, while focusing political attention on domestic issues.
Zelensky also argued that continued UK support for Ukraine aligns with British national interests and contributes to broader European security, according to reports.
The UK has provided substantial military, humanitarian, and economic assistance to Ukraine since the escalation of the conflict in 2022.
During the same visit, Zelensky also raised the issue of frozen proceeds from the sale of Chelsea FC by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, suggesting that the funds should be redirected toward humanitarian and defense-related uses in Ukraine.
